The focus of this project was to engage the school community and develop and deliver proposals that would improve pedestrian access and the wider public realm.
Working as a team alongside local authority officers and on behalf of Sustrans, Fin McNab (our Director) provided technical urban design input into the engagement process which identified the following:
- Narrow pavement widths due to overgrown hedges meant parents were often squeezed into the carriageway at busy times
- Irresponsible / dangerous parking at drop off / pick-up times
- Poor visibility and reports of ‘near misses’
Initial concept sketches reimagined the street with an increased amount of space for people. The final design saw widened pavements and new treatments to enhance the sense of pedestrian priority. This included a new resin bound surface dressing, street trees and places to sit.
